Competition and Art Exhibition for Young people organized by the Programme of ‘Fine Art’ offered at the University of Nicosia in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire.

• A competition for young people aged between 17 and 21 (university students are excluded).
• The 3 top winners will receive a partial scholarship to the BA (Hons) Fine Art Programme offered at the University of Nicosia in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire. The prizes will be 50% tuition waver for first place and 35% tuition waver for second and third place.
• The candidates must fulfill the required entrance criteria, as outlined by the two universities.
• Twenty five of the submitted works will be selected to be exhibited at the Leventis Municipal Museum in Nicosia.

The thematic of this competition and art exhibition will deal with the multiple understandings of the social geographies of the ‘home’. The concept of home is both personal and universal. The competition uses the allegory as a starting point for exploring the multiple notions of the home, which today appear as something ambiguous and intensely charged due to particular sociopolitical conditions. The ‘home’ can metaphorically represent a building, a commonality, a homeland or an affiliation between groups of people. For example, the concept of home in Middle Eastern countries often becomes intertwined with feelings of loss, nostalgia and homesickness, due to the specific political problems within the area. However, at a time of international travel and globalized conditions of living, the ‘home’ acquires new meanings and understandings and is transformed through alternative modes of perception. The ‘home’ can be interpreted as a physical place where we live or the community we belong to or the part of the world that we are affiliated with.

Some of the notions that this competition and art exhibition aims to focus on are:

• The ‘home’ as a cultural space – a place where identity is formed.

• The domestic and public space of the city. The home as a realm which is something different to the public realm.

• The ‘home’ is also homeland. The homeland as a factor that transforms our sense of identity and where we belong and the idea of home away from the homeland.

• Reflection on the failures of contemporary economical systems (e.g. capitalism) and of war, which both leave buildings and homes empty and spaces unutilized.

• Homelessness.

• The understanding of ‘home’ as natural environment; therefore, not only as a human habitat and environment, but also of animals and plants.

The contest is subject to the following general and technical terms and conditions. The acceptance of the terms and conditions is an integral part for participation.

General Terms and Conditions
• Young people aged between 17 and 21 are allowed to compete (university students are excluded).
• Each piece will be judged separately and independently.
• Duration of the competition: Monday 26/11/2012 to Tuesday 02/04/2013.
• For the purposes of the competition those interested have to submit:
• 1. The final artwork; this can be submitted in a variety of forms including painting, drawing, printmaking (50cmx70 cm), photography, engraving, 3D installation, and sculpture. If it is an engraving, installation or sculpture, 10 (ten) photographs must be submitted depicting the creative process until the final stage.
2. Each entry, besides the visual part, must include a written supportive document of the creative content of the proposal (work title and a text of 200 words maximum).
3. The final piece and the written supporting document must be placed in a sealed white envelope. Each contestant must also submit a second sealed envelope with all personal information and contact details. A unique number will be given upon delivery at the Intercollege Administration Offices, University of Nicosia.
• Awards
1st prize — First year partial scholarship of 50% off the Programme fees.
2nd prize — First year partial scholarship of 35% off the Programme fees.
3rd prize — First year partial scholarship of 35% off the Programme fees.
• Twenty five of the submitted works will be selected to be exhibited at a location in Nicosia in spring of 2013; details will be announced at a later date.
• Each contestant, by submitting his/her work, grants the right to publish, display, present or use in any other way, in printed or electronic format, part or all of his/her work to the organizer (University of Nicosia).
• All contestants must submit the following details: full name, correspondence address, mobile telephone number and email address. This information will be unavailable to the jury members. Each submission will be given a number and this will be the only form of identification that will be made available to the jury. The rest of the information will be confidential and will be revealed after the decision of the panel.
• Each work must be original, i.e. not a copy or a variation of another Artist’s work. The judging committee will decide on the authenticity of each work.
• In case the winner is under 18 years of age, the receipt of his/her prize must take place in the presence of a parent/guardian.
• The processing of the contestants’ personal data will be made according to the provisions of Law 138(I), as applicable, only and exclusively for the needs of conducting the contest and according to the terms of the present contest by the University of Nicosia and will not be used for any other purpose in the future. The said personal data will be destroyed within a reasonable time after the contest is concluded.
• University of Nicosia reserves the right to cancel the contest, alter the duration of the contest or to change any term of the contest at any time, as long as it is necessary at its absolute discretion. Any changes will be announced either through an advertisement/notice to the media or on the website https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/. The above mentioned amendments will be binding to all contestants and University of Nicosia assumes no responsibility regarding such changes.
• The winners will be announced on the Fine Art University of Nicosia website https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/ following the decision of the committee, by May 2013. The winners will be notified by telephone.
• The decision of the judging committee will be final.

The performance artist Christina Georgiou will talk about performance art, her artistic creation through this field and the 1st Cyprus International Performance Art Festival (CIPAF) as the founder, director and curator of this initiative. The festival will take place between 29th of May and 13th of June 2013 and brings established and emerging performance artists from around the globe in Cyprus while including a number of activities for both artists and the audience.

Christina Georgiou is a Cyprus-born visual and performance artist. She has exhibited and performed at international biennials, festivals, galleries, museums and theatres in Cyprus, Greece, U.K., Finland, Austria, France, Italy, Germany, Holland, Czech Republic, Russia, Mexico and Chile. She has received a ‘Special Prize’ for her performance ‘Eternal Return’ and she was selected as a finalist artist for the 6th Arte Laguna Art Prize at the Venice Arsenal in 2012.

Η performance artist Χριστίνα Γεωργίου θα μιλήσει για το performance art, την καλλιτεχνική της δημιουργία στο χώρο αυτό, καθώς και για το 1ο Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Performance Art στην Κύπρο (CIPAF) ως ιδρύτρια, διευθύντρια και επιμελήτρια της πρωτοβουλίας αυτής. Το φεστιβάλ θα πραγματοποιηθεί μεταξύ 29 Μαΐου και 13 Ιουνίου 2013, φέρνοντας στην Κύπρο καθιερωμένους και αναδυόμενους performance artists απ’ όλο τον κόσμο, ενώ συμπεριλαμβάνει μια σειρά από δραστηριότητες για καλλιτέχνες και το κοινό.

H Χριστίνα Γεωργίου είναι εικαστικός και performance artist από την Κύπρο. Έχει πραγματοποιήσει εκθέσεις και performances σε διεθνή φεστιβάλ, μπιενάλε, γκαλερί, μουσεία και θέατρα σε Κύπρο, Ελλάδα, το Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, Φινλανδία, Αυστρία, Γαλλία, Ιταλία, Γερμανία, Ολλανδία, Τσεχία, Ρωσία, Μεξικό και Χιλή. Έχει λάβει ‘Ειδικό Βραβείο’ για το performance έργο της ‘Αιώνια Επιστροφή’ και επιλέχθηκε ως φιναλίστ στον 6ο  Διεθνή Διαγωνισμό Arte Laguna στη Βενετία το 2012.

The thematic of this competition and art exhibition will deal with the multiple understandings of the notion of ‘home’. The concept of home is both personal and universal. The competition uses the allegory as a starting point for exploring the multiple notions of the home, which today appear as something ambiguous and intensely charged due to particular sociopolitical conditions. The ‘home’ after all can metaphorically represent a building, a commonality, a homeland or an affiliation between groups of people.

The Duration of the competition has been extended to Tuesday 02/04/2013.

Το πρόγραμμα «Χώρος  – Χρώμα – Χώρα», είναι ένας Διαγωνισμός και μια έκθεση Τέχνης για Νέους  που διοργανώνεται από το «Πρόγραμμα Καλών Τεχνών» που προσφέρεται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας σε συνεργασία με το Πανεπιστήμιο του Hertfordshire.

Το «Χώρος – Χρώμα – Χώρα»  συμπεριλαμβάνει

Διαγωνισμό τέχνης για νέους ηλικίας από 17 έως 21 ετών

Εικαστική έκθεση με είκοσι πέντε επιλεγμένα έργα νέων

Ημερίδα με τη συμμετοχή ακαδημαϊκών, εκπαιδευτικών και νέων και με θέμα τη δημοκρατικότητα στην εκπαίδευση και το ρόλο της τέχνης σε αυτήν τη διαδικασία

Η θεματική του διαγωνισμού και της εικαστικής έκθεσης θα εστιάζει στις πολλαπλές έννοιες των κοινωνικών γεωγραφιών της «οικίας». Η έννοια του σπιτιού, της εστίας, της οικίας και της πατρίδας, είναι τόσο προσωπική όσο και οικουμενική. Στο διαγωνισμό θα χρησιμοποιηθεί η αλληγορία ως αφετηρία εξερεύνησης των πολλαπλών εννοιών του σπιτιού, έννοιες που παρουσιάζονται σήμερα ως κάτι το ασαφές και έντονα φορτισμένο λόγω των ιδιαίτερων κοινωνικοπολιτικών καταστάσεων και συνθηκών.

Ο διαγωνισμός θα διαρκέσει έως και Τρίτη 02/04/2013.

Φωτογραφική Παρέμβαση στα πλαίσια της έκθεσης  

«anThrOPOS: Πρόσωπα της Κύπρου ανά τους αιώνες»

Το Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων (Υπουργείο Συγκοινωνιών και Έργων) ανακοινώνει ότι μέσα στα πλαίσια της έκθεσης «anThrOPOS: Πρόσωπα της Κύπρου ανά τους Αιώνες» (18/5/2012 – 3/3/2013) διοργανώνεται το Σάββατο 23 Φεβρουαρίου, ώρα 11.00, στην Αίθουσα Περιοδικών Εκθέσεων του Κυπριακού Μουσείου φωτογραφική παρέμβαση από μαθητές και φοιτητές.

Βασισμένη στην πιο πάνω έκθεση του Τμήματος Αρχαιοτήτων, η παρέμβαση αυτή παρουσιάζει φωτογραφικές δημιουργίες νέων της δευτεροβάθμιας και τριτοβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης. Χρησιμοποιώντας εξ’ ολοκλήρου το μέσο της φωτογραφίας, μαθητές Λυκείων του μαθήματος  Φωτογραφικής Τέχνης και φοιτητές του προγράμματος Καλών Τεχνών του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας, που προσφέρεται σε συνεργασία με το Πανεπιστήμιο του Hertfordshire, εκθέτουν τις δικές τους ερμηνείες για τη σύγχρονη ανθρώπινη μορφή στην Κύπρο. 

Τα πρόσωπα που φέρουν τα πήλινα και λίθινα γλυπτά της έκθεσης μας κοιτάζουν μέσα από το χρόνο. H φωτογραφική παρέμβαση των νέων εμπνέεται από την πολύ-επίπεδη έκθεση στο Κυπριακό Μουσείο: τις πολλαπλές θεματικές των αρχαίων εκθεμάτων (χαρακτηριστικά προσώπου, κομμώσεις, γενειάδες, φρύδια, καλύμματα κεφαλής, κοσμήματα, τατουάζ και βαφές), τα φωτογραφικά πορτρέτα του Πορφύριου Δίκαιου καθώς και την ερμηνεία της αρχαιολογίας μέσα από τη σύγχρονη τέχνη της Χάρις Επαμεινώνδα. Μέσα από τις φωτογραφίες των νέων αναδεικνύονται οι αντιλήψεις  τους γύρω από ένα θέμα που συνδέει την καθημερινή ανθρώπινη ύπαρξη με το πέρασμα του χρόνου και οι προβληματισμοί τους για τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι σύγχρονες πολιτικές, πολιτιστικές και κοινωνικές μεταβολές επηρεάζουν την ανθρώπινη μορφή.

Οι φωτογραφικές δημιουργίες των νέων θα εκτεθούν μέσα στην Αίθουσα Περιοδικών Εκθέσεων του Κυπριακού Μουσείου που φιλοξενεί την έκθεση «anThrOPOS: Πρόσωπα της Κύπρου ανά τους αιώνες». Το πρόγραμμα αυτό έχει αναπτυχθεί από το Τμήμα Αρχαιοτήτων Κύπρου, τη Δέσπω Πασιά σε συνεργασία με τον Όμιλο Καθηγητών Φωτογραφίας και την Εύη Τσελίκα του Προγράμματος Καλών Τεχνών του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας, που προσφέρεται σε συνεργασία με το Πανεπιστήμιο του Hertfordshire.

 Photographic Intervention within the framework of the exhibition “anThrOPOS: Faces of Cyprus through the Ages”

The Department of Antiquities (Ministry of Communications and Works) announces that within the framework of the exhibition «anThrOPOS: Faces of Cyprus through the Ages» organised by the Department of Antiquities (18/5/2012 – 3/3/2013), a Photographic Intervention by students will be presented on Saturday 23rd February, 11:00am at the Special Exhibition Hall of the Cyprus Museum.

Inspired by the thematic exhibition, the project presents the photographic creations of secondary school and university students. Photography students from various Lyceums throughout Cyprus and the students of the University of Nicosia’s Fine Arts programme, offered in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire, present their own interpretations of the contemporary Cypriot human figure and condition.

The exhibition’s artefacts, the ancient clay and stone faces, gaze at us through time. The students’ photographic interventions are inspired by the multi-layered exhibition at the Cyprus Museum: the various thematic categories of the ancient heads (facial features, hairstyles, beards, eyebrows, headgear, jewellery, tattoos and body paint), Porphyrios Dikaios’ photographic portraits and also the way in which contemporary artist Haris Epameinonda interprets archaeology through her art. The students’ photographic project visualizes their perceptions as to how the visual representation of the human form links everyday human existence with the passing of time. Through the students’ work we see reflected their own unique interpretation of the ways in which contemporary political, cultural and social changes affect, shape and transform the human figure.

The students’ work will be shown in the Cyprus Museum’s Special Exhibition Hall which also hosts the exhibition “anThrOPOS: Faces of Cyprus through the Ages”. The programme was developed by the Department of Antiquities, Despo Pasia in collaboration with the Association of Photography Teachers and Evi Tselika of the Fine Arts Programme of the University of Nicosia, which is offered in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire.

Χώρος – Χρώμα – Χώρα. Πληροφορίες Διαγωνισμού

Διαγωνισμός και έκθεση Τέχνης για Νέους από το «Πρόγραμμα Καλών Τεχνών» που προσφέρεται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας σε συνεργασία με το Πανεπιστήμιο του Hertfordshire

Ο διαγωνισμός θα διαρκέσει από Δευτέρα 26/11/2012 έως και Παρασκευή 15/03/2013.

  • Διαγωνισμός για νέους ηλικίας από 17 έως 21 ετών (αποκλείονται νέοι που ήδη φοιτούν στην ανώτατη εκπαίδευση).
  • Οι 3 νικητές θα λάβουν μερική υποτροφία για το πρόγραμμα Καλών Τεχνών [BA (Hons) inFineArt] που προσφέρεται από το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας σε συνεργασία με το Πανεπιστήμιο του Hertfordshire. 50% απαλλαγή διδάκτρων για την πρώτη θέση και 35% απαλλαγή διδάκτρων για τη δεύτερη και τρίτη θέση.
  • Οι υποψήφιοι θα πρέπει να πληρούν τα απαιτούμενα κριτήρια Εισδοχής, όπως καθορίζονται από τα δύο πανεπιστήμια.
  • Είκοσι πέντε από τα υποβληθέντα έργα θα επιλεγούν για να εκτεθούν.

Η θεματική του διαγωνισμού και της εικαστικής έκθεσης εστιάζει στις πολλαπλές έννοιες των κοινωνικών γεωγραφιών της «οικίας». Η έννοια του σπιτιού, της εστίας, της οικίας, της πατρίδας, είναι τόσο προσωπική όσο και οικουμενική. Στο διαγωνισμό θα χρησιμοποιηθεί η αλληγορία ως αφετηρία εξερεύνησης των πολλαπλών εννοιών του σπιτιού, έννοιες που παρουσιάζονται σήμερα ως κάτι το ασαφές και έντονα φορτισμένο λόγω των ιδιαίτερων κοινωνικοπολιτικών καταστάσεων και συνθηκών. Το «σπίτι» μπορεί μεταφορικά να αντιπροσωπεύει ένα κτίριο, ένα κοινωνικό σύνολο, μια πατρίδα ή μια συνεργασία μεταξύ ανθρώπινων ομάδων. Για παράδειγμα, η έννοια του σπιτιού σε χώρες της Μέσης Ανατολής συχνά συνδέεται με συναισθήματα απώλειας και νοσταλγίας λόγω των συγκεκριμένων πολιτικών προβλημάτων της περιοχής. Άλλωστε, σε μία εποχή όπου τα διεθνή ταξίδια είναι κάτι συνηθισμένο και η παγκοσμιοποίηση καθορίζει τις συνθήκες διαβίωσης, η έννοια της οικίας, του σπιτιού, της πατρίδας αποκτά καινούργιο περιεχόμενο και διαμορφώνεται μέσα από εναλλακτικές αντιλήψεις. Η «οικία» μπορεί να ερμηνευθεί ως ένα φυσικό μέρος στο οποίο διαμένουμε, ή η κοινότητα στην οποία ανήκουμε, ή το μέρος του κόσμου απ’ το οποίο προερχόμαστε.

Μερικές κατευθύνσεις στις οποίες στοχεύει να επικεντρωθεί ο διαγωνισμός και κατ’ επέκταση η έκθεση είναι:

  •  Η «οικία» ως ένας πολιτισμικός χώρος, ένας τόπος όπου η ταυτότητα διαμορφώνεται.
  • Ο ιδιωτικός χώρος του σπιτιού και ο δημόσιος χώρος της πόλης. Το σπίτι ως μία σφαίρα του ιδιωτικού σε αντίθεση με το δημόσιο.
  • Η «οικία», το σπίτι ως πατρίδα. Η πατρίδα ως παράγοντας που διαμορφώνει την αίσθηση ταυτότητάς μας, το πού ανήκουμε.
  • Προβληματισμός σχετικά με τις αποτυχίες των σύγχρονων οικονομικών συστημάτων (π.χ. καπιταλισμός) και του πολέμου, που αφήνουν κτίρια και σπίτια ερειπωμένα και χώρους αχρησιμοποίητους.
  • Η έλλειψη στέγης.
  • Η κατανόηση της «οικίας» ως φυσικό τοπίο, δηλαδή, όχι μόνο ως ανθρώπινο περιβάλλον αλλά και αυτό των ζώων και των φυτών

Ο διαγωνισμός υπόκειται στους παρακάτω γενικούς και τεχνικούς όρους και η αποδοχή τους αποτελεί αναπόσπαστο μέρος της συμμετοχής.

Γενικοί Όροι Διαγωνισμού

  • Δικαίωμα συμμετοχής έχουν νέοι από 17 έως 21 ετών (αποκλείονται νέοι που ήδη φοιτούν στην ανώτατη εκπαίδευση).
  • Κάθε έργο θα κριθεί ξεχωριστά και ανεξάρτητα.
  • Διάρκεια διαγωνισμού: από Δευτέρα 26/11/2012 έως και Παρασκευή 15/03/2013.
  • Για τους σκοπούς του διαγωνισμού, οι ενδιαφερόμενοι θα πρέπει να υποβάλουν:
  • 1. Sketchbook Μεγέθους Α3 (30x40 cm) με τα στάδια της έρευνας και την εξέλιξη της εργασίας πριν το τελικό αποτέλεσμα.

2. Το τελικό έργο τέχνης. Αυτό μπορεί να πάρει τη μορφή πίνακα ζωγραφικής, χαρακτικής εκτύπωσης ή σχεδίου διαστάσεων 50x70 cm, φωτογραφίας, χαρακτικού, εγκατάστασης ή γλυπτού. Σε περίπτωση κατάθεσης χαρακτικού, εγκατάστασης ή γλυπτού θα πρέπει να υποβληθούν 10 φωτογραφίες που απεικονίζουν λεπτομέρειες της πορείας του έργου έως την τελική μορφή του.

3. Κάθε συμμετοχή, εκτός από το εικαστικό μέρος πρέπει να περιλαμβάνει και γραπτή υποστήριξη του περιεχομένου της δημιουργικής πρότασης (τίτλο έργου και κείμενο το οποίο δεν θα υπερβαίνει τις 200 λέξεις).

4. Το τελικό έργο, το sketchbook και η γραπτή υποστήριξη του περιεχομένου θα πρέπει να τοποθετηθούν σε σφραγισμένο, λευκό φάκελο. Κάθε διαγωνιζόμενος θα πρέπει επίσης να παραδώσει ένα δεύτερο σφραγισμένο φάκελο με τα στοιχεία του. Στους δύο φακέλους θα δοθεί ένας μοναδικός αριθμός κατά την παράδοση στα Γραφεία του Intercollege, Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας.

  • Είκοσι πέντε από τα υποβληθέντα έργα θα επιλεγούν για να εκτεθούν σε έκθεση τέχνης που θα πραγματοποιηθεί την άνοιξη του 2013 στη Λευκωσία, σε τοποθεσία που θα ανακοινωθεί αργότερα.
  • Κάθε διαγωνιζόμενος, με την αποστολή του έργου του, παραχωρεί το δικαίωμα έκδοσης, έκθεσης, παρουσίασης ή οποιασδήποτε άλλης χρήσης, έντυπης ή ηλεκτρονικής μορφής, μέρους ή του συνόλου του έργου στον Διοργανωτή (Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας).
  • Θα πρέπει να αναγράφονται τα στοιχεία του διαγωνιζόμενου: όνομα και επώνυμο, διεύθυνση αλληλογραφίας, κινητό τηλέφωνο επικοινωνίας και ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση (email). Τα στοιχεία αυτά δεν θα δοθούν στην κριτική επιτροπή. Στον κάθε διαγωνιζόμενο θα δοθεί ένας αριθμός που θα παρουσιαστεί στη κριτική επιτροπή. Οι βιογραφικές πληροφορίες κάθε διαγωνιζόμενου θα παραμείνουν εμπιστευτικές και θα αποκαλυφθούν μόνο μετά την απόφαση της επιτροπής.
  • Κάθε έργο πρέπει να είναι πρωτότυπο, δηλαδή να μην αποτελεί αντιγραφή ή παραλλαγή έργου άλλου δημιουργού. Η κριτική επιτροπή θα αποφασίσει για τη γνησιότητα κάθε έργου.
  • Στην περίπτωση που ο νικητής είναι κάτω των 18 ετών η παραλαβή του βραβείου θα πρέπει να γίνει στην παρουσία γονέα ή κηδεμόνα.
  • Η επεξεργασία των προσωπικών δεδομένων των συμμετεχόντων θα γίνει σύμφωνα με τις διατάξεις του Νόμου 138(Ι), όπως ισχύει, αποκλειστικά και μόνο για τις ανάγκες της διεξαγωγής και σύμφωνα με τους όρους του παρόντος διαγωνισμού από το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας και δε θα χρησιμοποιηθούν για οποιοδήποτε άλλο σκοπό στο μέλλον. Τα εν λόγω προσωπικά δεδομένα θα καταστραφούν σε εύλογο χρονικό διάστημα μετά τη λήξη του διαγωνισμού.
    • Το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας διατηρεί το δικαίωμα να ανακαλέσει το διαγωνισμό, να τροποποιήσει τη διάρκειά του ή να μεταβάλει οποιονδήποτε όρο του οποτεδήποτε, εφόσον αυτό απαιτείται, κατά την απόλυτη κρίση της επιτροπής. Οποιεσδήποτε τυχόν τροποποιήσεις θα ανακοινωθούν είτε μέσω διαφημιστικής καταχώρισης/ανακοίνωσης στα ΜΜΕ ή από την ιστοσελίδα https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/. Οι ως άνω τροποποιήσεις θα είναι δεσμευτικές για όλους τους συμμετέχοντες και το Πανεπιστήμιο Λευκωσίας δεν αναλαμβάνει καμία ευθύνη αναφορικά με τις εν λόγω τροποποιήσεις.
    • Οι νικητές θα ανακοινωθούν στην ιστοσελίδα του Διαγωνισμού του Προγράμματος Καλών Τεχνών του Πανεπιστημίου Λευκωσίας https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/, στις 20 Απριλίου 2013, μετά την απόφαση της κριτικής επιτροπής και θα ειδοποιηθούν τηλεφωνικώς.

Competition and Art Exhibition for Young people organized by the Programme of ‘Fine Art’ offered at the University of Nicosia in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire.

Duration of Competition: Monday 26/11/2012 to Friday 15/03/2013

  •  A competition for young people aged between 17 and 21 (university students are excluded).
  • The 3 top winners will receive a partial scholarship to the BA (Hons) Fine Art Programme offered at the University of Nicosia in collaboration with the University of Hertfordshire. The prizes will be 50% tuition waver for first place and 35% tuition waver for second and third place.
  • The candidates must fulfill the required entrance criteria, as outlined by the two universities.
  • Twenty five of the submitted works will be selected to be exhibited.

The thematic of this competition and art exhibition will deal with the multiple understandings of the social geographies of the ‘home’. The concept of home is both personal and universal. The competition uses the allegory as a starting point for exploring the multiple notions of the home, which today appear as something ambiguous and intensely charged due to particular sociopolitical conditions. The‘home’ can metaphorically represent a building, a commonality, a homeland or an affiliation between groups of people. For example, the concept of home in Middle Eastern countries often becomes intertwined with feelings of loss, nostalgia and homesickness, due to the specific political problems within the area. However, at a time of international travel and globalized conditions of living, the ‘home’ acquires new meanings and understandings and is transformed through alternative modes of perception. The ‘home’ can be interpreted as a physical place where we live or the community we belong to or the part of the world that we are affiliated with.

Some of the notions that this competition and art exhibition aims to focus on are:

  • The ‘home’ as a cultural space – a place where identity is formed.
  • The domestic and public space of the city. The home as a realm which is something different to the public realm.
  • The ‘home’ is also homeland. The homeland as a factor that transforms our sense of identity and where we belong.
  • Reflection on the failures of contemporary economical systems (e.g. capitalism) and of war, which both leave buildings and homes empty and spaces unutilized.
  • Homelessness.
  • The understanding of ‘home’ as natural environment; therefore, not only as a human habitat and environment, but also of animals and plants.

The contest is subject to the following general and technical terms and conditions. The acceptance of the terms and conditions is an integral part for participation.

General Terms and Conditions

  • Young people aged between 17 and 21 are allowed to compete (university students are excluded).
  • Each piece will be judged separately and independently.
  • Duration of the competition: Monday 26/11/2012 to Friday 15/03/2013.
  • For the purposes of the competition those interested have to submit:
  • 1. A sketchbook- Size Α3 (30×40 cm) that shows the research development of the work before the final result.

2. The final artwork; this can be submitted in a variety of forms including painting, drawing, printmaking (50cmx70 cm), photography, engraving, 3D installation, and sculpture. If it is an engraving, installation or sculpture, 10 (ten) photographs must be submitted depicting the creative process until the final stage.

3. Each entry, besides the visual part, must include a written supportive document of the creative content of the proposal (work title and a text of 200 words maximum).

4. The final piece, the sketchbook and the written supporting document must be placed in a sealed white envelope. Each contestant must also submit a second sealed envelope with all personal information and contact details. A unique number will be given upon delivery at the Intercollege Administration Offices, University of Nicosia.

  • Awards

1st prize — First year partial scholarship of 50% off the Programme fees.

2nd prize — First year partial scholarship of 35% off the Programme fees.

3rd prize — First year partial scholarship of 35% off the Programme fees.

  • Twenty five of the submitted works will be selected to be exhibited at a location in Nicosia in spring of 2013; details will be announced at a later date.
  • Each contestant, by submitting his/her work, grants the right to publish, display, present or use in any other way, in printed or electronic format, part or all of his/her work to the organizer (University of Nicosia).
  • All contestants must submit the following details: full name, correspondence address, mobile telephone number and email address. This information will be unavailable to the jury members. Each submission will be given a number and this will be the only form of identification that will be made available to the jury. The rest of the information will be confidential and will be revealed after the decision of the panel.
  • Each work must be original, i.e. not a copy or a variation of another Artist’s work. The judging committee will decide on the authenticity of each work.
  • In case the winner is under 18 years of age, the receipt of his/her prize must take place in the presence of a parent/guardian.
  • The processing of the contestants’ personal data will be made according to the provisions of Law 138(I), as applicable, only and exclusively for the needs of conducting the contest and according to the terms of the present contest by the University of Nicosia and will not be used for any other purpose in the future. The said personal data will be destroyed within a reasonable time after the contest is concluded.
  • University of Nicosia reserves the right to cancel the contest, alter the duration of the contest or to change any term of the contest at any time, as long as it is necessary at its absolute discretion.  Any changes will be announced either through an advertisement/notice to the media or on the website https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/. The above mentioned amendments will be binding to all contestants and University of Nicosia assumes no responsibility regarding such changes.
  • The winners will be announced on the Fine Art University of Nicosia website https://fineartcourseuhcy.wordpress.com/ following the decision of the committee, by May 2013.  The winners will be notified by telephone.
  • The decision of the judging committee will be final.
